The Santa Truth

So in the past couple of week, Little Boy has learned the truth about Santa Claus. We relented, confirming the ugly rumors circulating in Second Grade: That the parents do buy the presents. This put a stop to the increasingly sophisticated queries Little Boy had about Santa, and all the blatant lies and silliness I had to come up in response. Side benefit: the logistics of Christmas morning have been simplified. He has also stopped visually inspecting the roofs and chimneys in our neighborhood in terms of their viability to support (respectively) twelve reindeer and a gigantic sleigh with a billion presents, and the entry and egress of a full-grown obese man.

Although it’s a little sad that he no longer believes in this bit of magic, knowing the truth has made him feel more mature. Yesterday some presents were sent to our house from France and Mr. P put them under the tree. “Where did those presents come from?” Little Boy asked.

“Santa!” I said teasingly.

“No such thing,” he said, with a heaping touch of blasé. This came from a boy who, two weeks ago, was asking me, in all seriousness, detailed questions about the anatomy of Christmas elves.

He also knows about the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny. We wanted to come clean completely.

In other news, the kitty cat looks forward to this time of year because a giant fake tree appears in the living room, allowing him to climb and perch on the branches and observe me as I work on my Grad school term paper, due tomorrow.

He’s been staring at me like this for the past 20 minutes:

The December weather has been fabulous, so much so that I’m still running about 40 miles per week despite having planned to be in off-season maintenance mode. I’ll wait for the cold, ice and snow to determine when that will start, but since my big race next year will probably be in the summer, I would welcome a downtime around late January. In any case, it’s been great to be able to go play outdoors in sunshine.
